2023 Health Recap
My health goal for 2023 was to get strong!! I’m very happy with my results, and I’ve put on a ridiculous amount of muscle mass. Keep reading for some quick learnings along the way.
Compounding matters in all aspects of your life. For someone who had 0 physical fitness foundation, small incremental changes and habits have helped me build up the fitness base I have. I’m currently the healthiest and strongest I’ve ever been in my life. Ex. In 2020, I had a goal to workout 3 days a week. At the end of 2023, being active is ingrained into a part of my every day life. It took me 3+ years to get to this point!
Change your narratives to suit yourself. I’ve always told myself I hate cardio because I’m bad at it (at 5’ my little legs can only move so fast!!). This is a silly and harmful narrative because I also fundamentally believe that you have agency over your own actions/thoughts.
In effort to prove to myself that I can change, I started incorporating more workouts focused on increasing my cardiovascular health over the past few months. I’m already seeing differences in how long and quickly I can run. I still don’t love it, but I’m learning to find joy in the little moments.
Make your environment work for you. Continuing with the running theme, I know that I suck at holding myself accountable to run, and I will definitely cut my runs short if I’m on my own. But, I found a running class at my gym, and now I show up every week, and risk embarrassment if I stop early. Peer pressure works folks.
Move until you love to move. Find physical activities that you love doing, preferably with people you love. That’s it.
Finding knowledgeable care is difficult. So much of our healthcare system is centered around helping sick people get better. There aren’t that many doctors that are centered around prevention and reaching peak health. Since moving to NY, I’ve been hopping around many different providers trying to find someone who will work with me to get healthier.
